It may be surprising to be discussing the sacrament of Confirmation already, but, here at OLGC, we offer Confirmation to those as young as 6th grade. Our formation is a two-year process which could start in 5th grade so please take this opportunity to consider beginning preparation for this great sacrament!

In 2012, our parish leadership felt inspired to reconsider the most fitting age for Confirmation sacramental preparation at OLGC.  Data and statistics from the past 15 years regarding the average age that children leave the faith (which is age 13) has added clarity as to why the Lord prompted this review. The sacrament of Confirmation was moved to 6th grade and, through this change, we have been able to provide youth with focused formation before they face their challenging teenage years. Now that we have well established 6th grade Confirmation, we have the opportunity to begin laying a foundation and start formal preparation in the 5th grade, as the Archdiocese of Detroit has requested all parishes create a two-year Confirmation formation process.

Year One Formation will begin with a Confirmation Kick-off Retreat on November 1st. Please save the date! Year One formation will include a second retreat in March, an event called “Launch,” and at-home formation regarding the Holy Spirit and the sacrament. A detailed overview of the year will be provided at the November retreat. 

 

The best way to know is to ask! Here are some questions for your child to consider:

Discuss the answers together. Belief in the teachings of the Church and having a trusting relationship with the Lord are a huge indicator of readiness. If your child wants to grow closer to the Lord and expresses a desire for this sacrament, he/she is clearly ready to enter formation for Confirmation.
